We are delighted to announce that Ben Brownson, Manager at RPG Chartered Accountants, recently represented Team MGB at The Maccabiah Games 2022.
The Games, otherwise known as the “Jewish Olympics” are the 2nd largest sporting event in the world and take place every 4 years; this year’s event celebrated the 21st Maccabiah between 12th – 26th July 2022. Approximately 10,000 athletes from over 60 countries competed in 38 different branches of sports. The opening ceremony took place at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem on 14th July with President of the United States, Joe Biden, in attendance. This is the first time the events have taken place since 2017 as the 2021 Games were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ben has represented Team MGB in 6 previous International Maccabi Games within the golf set-up, having held roles such as an athlete, player-manager, Junior Manager and has undertaken the voluntary role of Chairman of Golf since 2017.
The 21st Maccabiah Games saw Team MGB take one of their largest ever golf squads in history with the best representation across the different age brackets. Sponsorship of the Golf Team and Ben’s broader project ‘The Jewish Golf Initiative’ was provided by AstroPay, PSC Insurance Group, Cobra Puma Golf and Scottsdale Golf.
The Games proved to be a once in a lifetime experience for the entire golf squad with unrivalled success achieved by the Junior Boys Golf Team; it was the most successful in GB Golf Team’s history at The Games. They achieved a team silver medal (“gross” team event), alongside individual gold and silver medals in the “nett” competition for members of the squad.
Ben explains:
“I was thrilled to have been involved in this, the 21st Maccabiah Games, representing Team MGB. I am immensely proud of the achievements of the Great Britain golf squad.
“The pandemic caused some real issues with the team selection process and hampered our preparations but I am thrilled with how everyone came together as a squad, across all of the age categories.
“The Games is about more than just the sports competition with the squad throwing themselves into all aspects of the event. The social, cultural and religious elements were hugely appreciated by the whole team.
“I am extremely proud of the squad – they exceeded expectations, not just on the golf course, but also built a fantastic camaraderie and friendship off it.”
Team MGB gained an array of support from celebrities and sports personalities; the likes of Tyson Fury, Tom Cruise & Mauricio Pochettino shared video messages of support via Maccabi GB’s social media accounts.
