In parliament this week, prime minister David Cameron apologised publicly on behalf of the NHS for the needless suffering and deaths of patients of the Trust during the period, following an investigation ordered by the Coalition when it came to power in June 2010.
“This government has put compassion ahead of bureaucratic process-driven targets and put quality of care on a par with quality of treatment,” he said.
He added that a detailed response to the 290 recommendations made in the report will be given next month – but also stressed that he believes healthcare workers should be assessed not on the length of time they have been in their jobs, but on the quality of the care they deliver.
