Congratulations to Philip Moss on his retirement

Published on July 1, 2026 by RPG Chartered Accountants

Everyone at RPG Chartered Accountants would like to send their warmest wishes to Philip Moss, who retired on 30 June 2026 after an outstanding 42-year career with the firm.

During that time, Phil has provided clients with invaluable guidance and support, helped to train several generations of accountants and brought many smiles to colleagues and clients alike with his distinctive sense of humour and wonderfully individual outlook on life.

Philip joined Crawfords, now part of RPG Chartered Accountants, on 9 January 1984, shortly after graduating with a degree in Finance and Accounting from Salford University. Responding to a small advertisement for a “Junior Audit Clerk”, he began his career with the Simplex D Cashbook and a carrier bag of invoices, working on the books for a number of local fish and chip shops. It was a hands-on introduction to accountancy and the start of a steep but rewarding learning curve.

While Philip had a personal interest in computer programming in his twenties, writing complex mathematical puzzles on his Sinclair Spectrum, working life at the time remained firmly rooted in pen and paper. More recently, he embraced the benefits of Excel and digital accounting packages, while continuing to champion the importance of learning bookkeeping from the basics in order to understand the complexity behind the figures.

Throughout his career, Philip was trained and mentored by Mike Pawson who retired in 2023 and the late Tony Wacks, who sadly passed away shortly before the merger with RPG was completed. Philip’s ability to interrogate the numbers and interpret the outcomes has been one of his great strengths, and it is a skill he has generously shared with junior colleagues over many years.

Having worked with the same firm for more than four decades, Philip has built exceptionally strong relationships with many clients, some of whom he has supported for over 30 years. In several cases, those relationships have continued through generations, and Philip has played an important role in ensuring they have been passed seamlessly to colleagues at RPG.

Jonathan Brownson commented: “I have had the great pleasure of knowing Philip for many years. We had mutual friends during our school years and so I was delighted to welcome Philip when Crawfords joined RPG in March 2021. Philip’s values and approach have been greatly valued across the firm, and he leaves a tremendous legacy. On behalf of everyone at RPG Chartered Accountants, I would like to thank him for all he has contributed and wish him a very happy retirement.”
