As the UK population continues to shift towards longer life expectancies and a higher average age, our accounting for doctors is available to those with practices in the region’s retirement hotspots.
Look outside of the north-west though, and it becomes apparent that access to healthcare is not the only factor that determines overall quality of life.
A recent report from Prudential ranked Devon in south-west England as the area with the absolute best quality of life for retirees, based on a balance of healthcare access, crime rates, life expectancy and differences in wellbeing for men and women.
Devon residents have access to 65.6 healthcare workers per 1,000 population – quite high compared to the 60.9 average for England and Wales.
Tellingly though, second-ranked Dorset, also in the south-west, has just 59.1 medical professionals per 1,000 residents, but scores better on crime rates and life expectancy.
It’s clear that, even in these retirement hotspots, access to medical care is mixed; Manchester of course has some of the nation’s leading hospital facilities and specialist healthcare services, and our accounting for doctors in the city helps to make the most not just of the local patient need, but also of those coming into the area for treatment.
